Forex market holidays 2026 and 2027

Forex market holidays close a financial centre, not the market. Spot forex has no exchange that shuts, so it only stops at the weekend; on a holiday it trades thinner, because the closed centre's banks stay away and its currency does not settle that day.

On Good Friday, 3 April 2026, London and euro settlement (T2) were closed while the US jobs report came out at 08:30 New York time. Every date below is from the centre's own official calendar, read on 21 October 2026.

Dates from the Federal Reserve, GOV.UK, the ECB, Japan's Cabinet Office and the Bank of Japan, read on 21 October 2026.

Is the forex market open on holidays?

Yes, in the sense that matters for a chart. Spot forex is traded over the counter, between banks, brokers and funds, not on an exchange that can close its doors. The market as a whole stops only at the weekend. On a holiday it keeps trading, but the banks of the closed centre stay away, and with them much of the volume in their currency.

Less volume usually means wider spreads and a price that jumps more easily, so a stop close to the price can fill worse than on a normal day. The pairs to expect it in carry the closed centre's currency: the pound on a UK bank holiday, the yen in Japan's Golden Week at the start of May, the dollar on Thanksgiving.

Settlement is the other half. A currency settles through its own payment system, and when that system is closed a trade in it settles on the next day it is open. The ECB said so in as many words in 2000: a TARGET closing day is not a settlement day for foreign exchange involving the euro. That later date is also why a broker can charge the overnight swap for more than one night around a holiday.

What closed means on this page

  • New York. The Federal Reserve Banks are closed.
  • London. A bank holiday in England and Wales.
  • T2 (euro). T2, the ECB's system that settles the euro, is closed.
  • Tokyo. A national holiday in Japan, or the Bank of Japan's year-end closure.

None of these is your broker's schedule. Brokers publish their own holiday trading hours, which can differ from all four, and theirs decides whether you can place a trade. Sydney, Wellington, Toronto and Zurich keep holidays of their own that thin out their currencies the same way; they are not on this page yet.

Good Friday, Christmas, New Year and Thanksgiving

The days people ask about most, with which of the four centres is closed. None of them is a weekend, so whether you can trade is your broker's call; how thin it gets depends on how many centres are away.

Good Friday splits the market. London and euro settlement are closed, the Federal Reserve and Tokyo are open. In 2026 the US jobs report for March came out that morning, so the dollar was repriced with most of Europe away. Easter Monday closes London and euro settlement again.

Christmas and New Year. On Christmas Day 2026 only Tokyo, of the four, keeps business hours. New Year's Day closes all four, and the Bank of Japan is closed from 31 December to 3 January. In 2027 Christmas Day and New Year's Day 2028 fall on a Saturday: the Federal Reserve Banks open on the Friday before each, while the Board of Governors closes.

Thanksgiving closes New York only. Europe and Tokyo trade as usual, so the dollar trades without its home market for a day.

The Federal Reserve Banks are closed. When a holiday falls on a Saturday they open on the Friday before, while the Board of Governors closes; when it falls on a Sunday, every Federal Reserve office closes on the Monday after.

Releases that land on a holiday

28 scheduled releases and central bank decisions in 2026 and 2027 come out while one of the four centres is on holiday. A centre counts when the moment falls on its holiday by its own clock, so a Tokyo figure at 08:30 on Good Friday counts for euro settlement, where it is already Friday, and not for London, where it is still Thursday.

The dates are the publishers' own: the 20 releases with a published calendar on our economic calendar, read on 15 October 2026, and the eight central banks' decision dates, read on 13 October 2026. Other releases can land on a holiday too.

What to watch on a prop firm account

A thin market costs more than it looks. A wider spread and a worse fill come out of the same daily loss limit as a losing trade, so a holiday is a day to size for the fill you might get, not the stop you placed.

A release on a holiday is still a high-impact release. If your firm restricts trading around news, the window applies as on any other day; the list above shows which releases fall on one, and the news trading rules per firm show how long each firm's window is.

Whether a holiday counts as a trading day toward a minimum, and when the daily loss resets around one, is in your firm's own terms. Our firm pages cover the news rules only. How to pass a prop firm challenge goes through the rest of the rules.

One firm writes closures into its rules

Their terms ban gap trading: opening trades while major news is scheduled and two hours or less before a market closes for two hours or longer.

FXIFY, from their own pages, read on 15 October 2026. A long weekend or the Christmas break is such a closure.

The rest of the trading week

Which session is open right now is on the market hours clock, with the London, New York and Tokyo sessions in detail. The hours that move the majors most are on the best time to trade forex.

Questions about forex holidays

Is the forex market open on Good Friday?

Spot forex trades, but thinly. On Good Friday, 3 April 2026 and 26 March 2027, London and euro settlement (T2) are closed, while New York and Tokyo are open. In 2026 the US jobs report still came out that morning, at 08:30 New York time. Whether you can trade at all is up to your broker's holiday hours.

Is forex open on Christmas Day?

Barely. On Friday, 25 December 2026, New York, London and euro settlement (T2) are closed and only Tokyo keeps business hours, so there is very little to trade with. In 2027 Christmas Day is a Saturday: London closes on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December instead, and the Federal Reserve Banks are open on Friday 24 December.

Is the forex market open on Thanksgiving?

Yes, outside the United States. On Thanksgiving, 26 November 2026 and 25 November 2027, the Federal Reserve is closed while London, euro settlement (T2) and Tokyo are open. Dollar pairs trade with the American side away, so expect them to be thinner than usual.

Is forex open on 26 December?

Not in London. In 2026, 26 December is a Saturday and London takes Boxing Day on Monday 28 December instead, when New York, euro settlement (T2) and Tokyo are open. In 2027 it is a Sunday, and London's Boxing Day falls on Tuesday 28 December.

Is forex open on New Year's Day?

It is as close to closed as a weekday gets. On Thursday, 1 January 2026 all four centres on this page were closed, and on Friday, 1 January 2027 all four are closed again. The Bank of Japan stays closed until 3 January.

Is the forex market open on weekends?

No. It closes on Friday evening in New York and opens again on Monday morning in Sydney, which is still Sunday in Europe and the Americas. A holiday that falls on a weekend closes nothing extra, unless the centre moves it to a weekday, as London does with its substitute days. Which session is open now
