What is in New Zealand building consents
Stats NZ counts the new homes, non-residential buildings and alterations approved for construction each month, with their number, floor area and value.
New dwellings are split by type, from stand-alone houses to townhouses, flats and units, apartments and retirement village units, and by region.
The release also gives the annual count of new homes and the number consented per 1,000 residents, which sets the figure against the size of the population.
Why New Zealand building consents matter for the Kiwi
A consent is a plan, not a building. Consents point to residential construction in the months that follow, and that feeds into GDP through investment in housing.
The RBNZ follows housing because, in its own words, house prices are closely linked to consumer spending. Building activity is part of that picture.
The Kiwi usually reacts less to consents than to CPI, the jobs report or the RBNZ. A run of strong or weak months adds to the view of growth that the market builds before GDP comes out.
How to read the building consents figure
Monthly numbers swing a lot. Stats NZ notes that the timing of large multi-unit projects, such as townhouses and apartment buildings, can move a single month sharply.
So read the annual total and the trend next to the monthly change. Stats NZ also reports stand-alone houses on their own, and those are less affected by one large project.
Non-residential consents are reported by value, and Stats NZ points out that this series can be influenced by changes in building prices.
What the New Zealand dollar did on the last release days
Measured on our own prices: the New Zealand dollar against the basket of the eight majors, from the London opening before the release to the one after it, so the release sits inside the window. Anything else that came out between those two openings is in it too, so a day with more news says less about this release alone.
| Release | Amsterdam | Measured | NZD vs basket |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 Sept 2026 | 23:45 | 30 Sept to 1 Oct | -0.31% |
For scale: on an ordinary day the New Zealand dollar moves 0.20% against the basket from one London opening to the next, either way, on average over the 250 trading days since 14 Oct 2025.
The forecast, the figure itself and what it changed in our view of the currency are in the app, next to the research.
